Sean Paul, Dua Lipa’s ‘No Lie’ Goes Double Platinum In UK
No Lie—the 2016 R&B-tinged reggae-pop song by Dancehall superstar Sean Paul and English singer Dua Lipa—is now certified double platinum in the UK.
According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), No Lie was issued the BRIT Certified Multi-Platinum (2x) award today (February 25), after it sold more than 1,200,000 copies in the UK as measured by The Official Charts Company.
The song went platinum in August 2017, eight months after the premiere of its official music video, which featured Sean Paul and Dua Lipa dancing in several different mirrored rooms and halls. The video is inching closer to the one billion views mark on YouTube, registering 964 million views total, after amassing 239 million views in 2021 alone.
The song was written by Sean Paul and Emily Warren, and released via Island Records on November 18, 2016, as the lead single from Paul’s Mad Love The Prequel EP. It was later included on Dua Lipa: Complete Edition in 2018, the super deluxe reissue of Dua Lipa’s debut studio album.
Sean Paul and Dua promoted the song back then, with a slew of performances including at BBC Radio One’s Big Weekend, Capital FM’s Jingle Bell, and Summertime Ball.
In a recent interview with AskMen, Paul explained that after he and Warren wrote the song, someone in his management group suggested Dua Lipa be approached, which led to her also recording a demo of the song.
“I wrote the song with Dua Lipa, No Lie with a girl named Emily Warren. Emily did a demo of it and there’s a certain thing about her vocals that just stands out. Nobody could hit it. I didn’t know what Dua sounded like, but when I heard her demo, I knew it was it,” he explained.
“There’s a lot of people that come at me with the new artists or acts, and it’s like maybe this song is dope, but I don’t love the voice or just the tone of the person,” he said. “Just the look of her whole vibe and her voice is dope. Her voice is the first thing that really spoke to me. The tone and the vibe were very sexy, so I was there from the beginning,” he had also told Genius.
No Lie was included on the soundtrack to the film Baywatch (2017) as well as in the opening credits of Code Black Season 3, Episode 11: “One of Our Own”, in 2018.
The single was successful in Europe, where it entered the top 10 of the charts in seven countries across the continent, including the UK Singles Chart, becoming Paul’s 12th and Lipa’s first top 10 single there. It debuted at number 53 on the UK Singles Chart and lasted 30 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 10 in its 11th week.
It also entered the top 10 of the charts in Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, and Scotland and was certified platinum in France, Germany.
Over in Italy, No Lie rose to number 11 on the FIMI Singles Chart and was certified quadruple platinum by the Federzione Industria Musicale Italiana (FIMI) for 200,000 track-equivalent sales in the country.
Elsewhere, it reached number 43 and 45 in Venezuela and Columbia, respectively, and charted at number 20 on the Hot Canadian Digital Songs and number 27 on the Mexico Airplay chart.
Sean Paul’s other platinum-selling songs in the UK are Dangerous Love with Fuse Odg, Temperature, She Doesn’t Mind, Get Busy, What About Us with Saturdays, Boasty with Wiley, and Stefflon Don, and Breathe with Blu Cantrell.
