Popcaan, Delroy Wilson’s Music In ‘Top Boy’ Season 4
The music of Dancehall star Popcaan and veteran rocksteady singer, the late Delroy Wilson is featured in the latest season of the Netflix drama Top Boy.
Top Boy, a British television crime drama created and written by Ronan Bennett, is a series is set on a fictional summerhouse estate in the London Borough of Hackney.
Popcaan’s Come Over featuring British-Jamaican singer Jorja Smith pops up in episode 3.
The single was certified silver for sales in excess of 200,000 copies in the United Kingdom last year – the fourth such silver certification for Popcaan. It was a modest hit on the British pop chart, peaking at No. 35 in October 2020. The song also crossed over to the US Billboard Adult R&B Airplay chart where it reached No. 27 in December 2020.
Drake, one of the show’s executive producers, had included Popcaan’s Billions featuring Quada in the third season of the show, back in 2019. The album Top Boy — a selection of music inspired by the series was released in September 2019 by OVO Sound and Warner.
The Unruly Boss was recently pictured at the premiere of the show, which was released on the streaming service last Friday.
Meanwhile, Delroy Wilson’s 1974 anthem Have Some Mercy is featured in episode eight of season 4.
Have Some Mercy was produced by Ainsley Folder, and released through the Dee Jay Music Label, followed by releases through the Cactus and Sydna Labels the following year.
With his sparkling vocals, Delroy Wilson bleeds all over this classic track, pleading for his lady to come back home and begs for another chance as they’ve recently broken up and since that time, his life has gone completely off the rails. This song remains one of Wilson’s signature classics.
In the then politically charged era, Delroy Wilson’s career suffered as a result as he was branded a “socialist”. The same year saw the release of one of his most popular songs, “Cool Operator”, which became his nickname. He died at age 46 in March 1995. In 2013, some 19 years after his death, the Government of Jamaica posthumously accorded him the Order of Distinction for his 33-year contribution to Jamaican music.
