Vybz Kartel Seemingly Takes Aim At Beenie Man Over Trap Dancehall: “Wutliss Old Dawg”
Days after Beenie Man reprimanded music selector Boom Boom and imputed that he had joined forces with Trap artists to “mash-up” Dancehall and Reggae, Vybz Kartel has responded with a stinging rebuke, seemingly aimed at the Old Dog deejay.
“Grey beard old waste men who inna business 30 years and still wah inna competition wid kids, quick question: after so many decades, weh unuh record company de fi buss new acts? Weh unuh club de fi promote the genre dat paid you? Weh unu merchandise suh unuh can give youths contract? Unu wutliss old dawg unuh. Low di yute dem,” Kartel declared on his Instagram stories yesterday.
Kartel’s comments come after Beenie accused Boom Boom and his sidekick Harry Hype of dedicating a disproportionately large amount of time to playing “Trap Dancehall” music while shunning “real Dancehall” at the Boom Sunday event on Sunday (March 27).
“Yuh have Chap Hip Hop; you have Chap Pop. Suh everybaddy just put Chap inna it… oonu chap up Dancehall. Don’t blame we; blame yuhself. A wha happen to oonu man? Wi meck good Dancehall song gi oonu and oonu don’t play it!” Beenie had declared on a microphone, whilst standing in the middle of the Boom Sunday’s audience.
Declaring himself as “King a dis”, Beenie had ordered the selectors to “play Dancehall music”.
“A whappen to yuh Harry Hype? When man come gi oonu Dancehall song oonu don’t play it. Oonu play Trap Dancehall. Dem man deh naw come a oonu party enuh. An we weh deh yah, oonu naw play we. Di man dem weh nuh deh yah, oonu play dem. One hour and two hour and three hour. A dem a f_ck up di music!” Beenie had said.
In his defence, Harry Hype had faulted the authentic Dancehall artists for not being prolific in the releasing of songs, unlike their younger Trap counterparts, while Boom Boom had said he was not upset with Beenie, and that he was only using his platform to give young artistes a “helping hand” to ensure that they do not turn to a life of crime.
Interestingly, Beenie’s confrontation with Boom Boom had come weeks after he himself, released a new song, titled King Of Dancehall , which was laid on a Dancehall-Trap fusion beat, and saw him outlining how and why his credentials and antecedents have made him Dancehall’s ‘One King’.
Over the years, the Worl’ Boss and Beenie Man have been in a constant disputation over who is the King of Dancehall.
In December 2021, Beenie had declared during an interview on Ghana’s Hitz 103.9FM, that he remains the one and only “King of the Dancehall” as he was the one who “buss” Vybz Kartel on the world stage supposedly via the Billboard chart. The Craig Town native had made the statements after he was asked how he managed to keep the Dancehall King title “for so many years”.
Beenie had also said that his mentorship of Kartel began after the dramatic Sting 2003 incident where the Cake Soap artist and his friends engaged Ninjaman in an onstage fight during their lyrical clash, which resulted in Kartel being shunned by music promoters.
“Das why wi have one king and not two…,” Beenie had declared.
