Naw Sell Out singer Khago and Macka Diamond have shared the same sentiments that Jamaican artists have taken the island’s indigenous music for granted, to their own detriment.

In commenting on SOJA’s Best Reggae Album Grammy win on Sunday, Macka Diamond said that there were some artists who were focusing on the wrong things and that the Grammy win by the Virginia-based group was a wake-up call for the industry.

“🤣🤣 wake up call wake dem up Grammys wake we up lol,” Macka Diamond wrote in a post on Monday.

The Cucumber singer also pointed to how the Government of Jamaica has treated the music in comparison to one of its Caribbean neighbours.

“You all think the world not seeing that we Jamaicans don’t support our own artists and culture.  In Trinidad, the Government make sure Soca is their biggest thing.  There are certain times in Trinidad no other music is allowed to play but Soca,” Macka noted.

“The Spanish push their own.  Look at Cardi B.  Africans putting out more Dancehall and Reggae than us; pushing their own calling it Afrobeats.  But you all Jamaicans keep bringing down each other all over the internet having bloggers doing negative stuff, instead of pushing our music.   I knew this day would come.  Winning Grammy, being selfish to each other isn’t sales.   We need to wake the hell up.  We won the Grammy for the most internet mix-up, not music.  I said what I said, Bye,” Macka added.

For his part, Khago said that while SOJA’s singers were weak vocally, it should be no surprise that they won, as Jamaican artists have circumvented Reggae and have ditched the genre for “chap” music, and that whatever is being passed off as Reggae has been watered down.

“Mi listen all Solja song which part win all Grammy my Lord.  Yuh can teck up any handcart man; yuh can teck off any gyal or anybaddy offa di street corner a Jamaica, an dem can sing betta dan dem deh white bwoy.  But don’t blame dem.  Jamaicans naw sing Reggae music anymore.   Wi naw sing paa Reggae beat.   Wi a sing Chap!  Wi chappin, an swaggin!  Eeh?” he stated in a video he shared on Instagram.

“Suh, if no Reggae music not comin out – even if di Reggae music a come out, it caan skank.  It hip.  Di Reggae music nave no vibes. It naa no waistline; it nuh ha no waistline or no bassline.  Suh at di end a di day, don’t blame dem,” the Manchester native said.

While Khago’s post did not attract comments, Macka Diamond’s post had found favour with many of her compatriots and several Trinidadians who corroborated her radio airplay statement, one of whom noted that: “from January until carnival done nothing else on the radio but soca.”

A few of her followers and a number of Spice’s “besties”, though, sought to rebuke her.

“You throwing words for spice and her internet dramas as if Sean Paul, gramps and etana weren’t also nominated and haven’t had the internet mix up and lost just the same. Please stop ✋️,” Missworlio said.

“I also agree that Jamaicans need to support each other more where music is concerned but I def see what you’re doing with the last part of your comment and that was unnecessary,” she added, to which Macka responded: “I’m throwing for myself too my dear if you read well we all are Jamaicans love you thx❤️”.

There were others though, who were not so measured in their responses.

“Macka a look a hype and a rejoice sey Spice didn’t win the Grammy but a the same throw wud and division cause it. You will NEVER see billboard charts much less Grammy red carpet.   Spice accomplished what nuff a unnu could if the unity is there. Unnu just badmind…,” unauthorisedliving said.

“Macka Diamond, u a big oooman lol u fi stop u fi happy fi the woman thats why u still ina the barrel bottom she accomplish alot happy fi the woman so u blessings can flow we all know. @spiceofficial win already spice u win for me…,” another said.
