Charlamagne Tha God Says Spice Should Have Won The Reggae Grammy
If you ask The Breakfast Club host Charlamagne tha God, he’d tell you that Spice should have won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album last Sunday.
Charlamagne and his colleague Andrew Schulz, who both host The Brilliant Idiots podcast, weighed in on the debate surrounding the bunch of “white guys” that won this year’s Best Reggae Album at the 64th Grammy awards. The Virginia-based Reggae band SOJA had upstaged Jamaican artists Spice, Sean Paul, Etana, Gramps Morgan, and Jesse Royal with their Beauty in the Silence album.
Charlamagne, who admitted that he hadn’t listened to Spice’s album 10 or any of the other nominee’s work for that matter, was adamant that the Grammy Award should have gone to the Queen of Dancehall.
“If you ask me who should’ve won that category, Imma a say Spice. You know why? Cause I like Spice. I haven’t heard the music though. I heard Spice’s [previous] records but I don’t know [her recent work],” he said.
On Monday, Spice sought to put things into perspective and comforted her disappointed fans by pointing out that she had come a long way as the first female hardcore Dancehall act to be nominated in the category.
“Besties don’t cry we’ve come along way. Remember I came from Homeless to this day so I’m really still very humbled and grateful, I see all your support and disappointments but you know we never give up, we back at it again tomorrow‼️ I love you all so much, watch little Gracie pan Grammy red Carpet 😘💙💙💙17m,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
“The Grammys is not ours!”
Spice and Shaggy, who executive-produced her album 10, were guests on the Breakfast Club last June, during the project’s promotional run. It was evident then that Charlamagne had much to learn about the genre.
On Friday, there was still some confusion for him and the Brilliant Idiots panel regarding this year’s Reggae nominees and how they sized up against each other, but nonetheless, Charlamagne argued that the Recording Academy shouldn’t have authority over Reggae music.
“By the way, I’ve never heard of this white group but also, I don’t care. It’s the Grammys! Like why do y’all still allow the Grammys to make y’all mad about things,” he said. “The Grammys have never historically gotten it right. It’s literally like you’re Charly Brown and you’re running to kick the football every year. It’s the Grammys!”
Charlamagne noted that just last week, many were talking about boycotting the Grammys and now they’re mad at the outcome. “You know what’s so wild, a week ago everybody was talking about boycotting the Grammys. Now a week later, everybody is celebrating and mad cause of who didn’t win and this and that, its like make up y’all f—kin minds.”
The radio show host also argued that if the Reggae Grammy award had gone to Spice, there wouldn’t have been so much debate.
“We wouldn’t have even noticed that category if people hadn’t gotten mad about it on social media. And if Spice would have won, which she probably should have, we wouldn’t even have that much conversation around her winning, the way we do around these white guys winning.”
“We have to stop doing that. Why do we continuously do that?…This shit is silly … the Grammys is not ours!” he remarked.
