Shenseea “Hurt” Over Magazine’s Photoshopped Nude Cover: “I Literally Feel Violated!”
Shenseea is protesting her au naturel cover on Numéro Netherlands magazine which was heavily retouched. More so, the Jamaican singer is contending that she didn’t authorize the magazine to issue the stripped-down photo showcasing her fully nude body.
“I literally feel violated! My whole privacy! I have never showed that much skin on the net ever!” the Blessed singer wrote in an Instagram story over the weekend. “This is not my image or who I even portray to be. I did not approve that damm photo! I’m not even upset…. I’m hurt!!! Honestly!”
In the cover photo by Nikolai Kokanovic, which has since been pulled by the magazine, the usually full-figured bombshell appeared thinner with floor-length hair, styled by Lisa Jarvis. Her upper body and waist, in particular, were clearly edited to look more angular and smaller.
“Idgaf how big or small the magazine is. This is never happening to me again!” she continued. “That’s some BULLSH-T! And on top [it] off that edit is shit! Doesn’t even look like me. Once I start feeling like I don’t have control over my own career..I WILL END IT! My integrity and my peace matters to me.”
Numéro, which is an international fashion magazine, covers fashion, beauty, design, health, architecture and decor, as well as spreads on trendsetting celebrities.
“Shenseea adorns our last but not least print cover! 💫,” the magazine wrote in an Instagram post. “Rising global sensation SHENSEEA just released her debut album. ALPHA is a genre spanning album anchored in dancehall, hip hop and pop, that spotlights the Jamaican artist’s songwriting prowess and ear for insatiable melodies and hooks….SHENSEEA has ascended through Jamaica’s dancehall ranks to become one of the genre’s most sought-after artists.”
Retouching cover photos is nothing new in the magazine business or for Numéro—they have done this kind of thing before. For Shenseea, however, the experience was unacceptable and disrespectful.
“I’m such a cool person but people really been showing me I need to be a b-tch frfr! I hardly got rest and still showed up to that shoot, did 3 interviews during glam of that shoot, went above the number of looks I was told I would be doing FOR THAT SHOOT! I was tired as f-ck doing that shoot! And this is what I f-cking get????” she continued.
“This is the First and LAST time this will ever happen to me! Then when artists change into BEASTS y’all complain! I don’t even spazz on the net!! This shit disrespectful dawg!”
Over on ZipFM’s Instagram page, where the photo was shared, Jamaican fans chimed in. “Like them beat in poor shen shoulder blade,” wrote one follower.
“They photoshopped the hell out of her. Never get why they do that. They chose her then changed everything about her,” another added.
A few followers defended the stripped-down pose. “So Riri literally has topless photos .. Beyonce has done similar shoots… everyone cheers and accepts. … Shen does it and she get chastised,” one fan wrote.
“I always see American/overseas celebrities on covers of magazines, often naked and not once mi see onu disrespect them so. What’s the problem onu have with this girl? It’s very puzzling,” another supporter added.
Meanwhile, Shenseea’s fans got the inside scoop of behind-the-scenes photos from her recently released RU That music video on Instagram on Friday. Shot in Atlanta, Georgia, the visuals for RU That featuring rapper 21 Savage officially premiered on Tuesday, April 19. The mini film was directed by LateMilk – an Italian and European-based video company, in collaboration with creative executive Sachidanand Marco Gentile of Ocean Code Studio out of Milan.
The Dancehall singer uploaded a few looks of her wardrobe pieces during the shoot, including the one in scenes wearing the green rhinestone two-piece with fur coat, another donning the black leather turtleneck monokini with trench coat and thigh-high boots, and also what appears to be a favorite, the red leather zipper-front jacket and skirt set with matching knee-high boots.
While sharing her looks from the video shoot, the Deserve It singer revealed that was just one of two video shoots she did that day. Fans will just have to wait for the next unveiling and keep guessing which other song made it to production.
“Shot 2 music videos in one day! I was beat!! 😩 but it was worth it! Some #BTS from R U THAT…video out now ❤️🔥?” she wrote on the post.
Film director LateMilk and creative exec Ocean Code also shared BTS highlights on their Instagram pages and took the time to thank others on the creative team.
“Thanks to all the amazing people involved in this project!” LateMilk wrote on clips they shared.
Milan-based creatives, Diego La Rosa – the digital colorist of Not Bad Collective and cinematographer Enrico Valoti of State Vision, who both worked on set also shared their exclusive BTS footage.
“Thanks everyone for the fantastic experience in the States!” La Rosa wrote on a series of photos he shared on IG.
Other credits extended to Californian set designer Hanna Nisa Ali (painter-turned-designer for Kanye West and Diplo) of Hoechitecture and visual artiste Yhellow – a video production company based in LA.
