DJ Crazy Neil Says Nicki Minaj, Skeng Remix Not A Good Idea: “Anyone Else, Not Her”
Acclaimed Montego Bay disc jockey and music producer DJ Crazy Neil says Nicki Minaj ought to disabuse herself of any thoughts she might have that her doing a remix of Skeng and Tommy Lee Sparta’s song Protocol, is a good idea.
Quoting lines from the song’s hook almost a week ago, the Trinidad-born rapper had declared Protocol track the “baddest song to come out in years” on the official YouTube video, which has amassed more than 23.5 million views since it was released on November 11 last year.
However, on ZJ Sparks’ Instagram page where a screengrab of Minaj’s comment was shared, the outspoken Crazy Neil said that the song was already huge and needed no remix from Nicki, as based on the feeble job she had done on the remix of Skillibeng’s Crocodile Teeth, she would likewise add very little value, while riding on Skeng and Tommy Lee’s wave.
“Yeah dem nuh wah no remix doh tanks,” the disc jockey stated, later adding: “…park it like crocodile teet remix get park🤣.”
After a few dissenting followers tried to counteract his objections, Crazy Neil went into details, pointing out that the Bang Bang rapper had used Skillibeng’s Crocodile Teeth “to get a hype”.
He also chided those Jamaicans who were calling for another collab from her, noting that the music being done by the youngsters like Skeng and Skilibeng were superior to Nicki’s and that of NBA Young Boy, whom he argued, had come up with a similarly weak remix of Skillibeng’s Whap Whap.
“And Nicki did nothing for skilli other than use it to try get Hype. I like her but she mustn’t be allowed to use another set a ute hot song. Not officially,” he said.
“Only licky licky hungry belly people think it would be holding back youths. Or people who think Jamaican music inferior and hood American music in higher regard and only see $$$$ or hope it will help get yo that. Anyone else not her she nah do nutten for it. NBA young boy nah do nutten fi WHAP either,” he added.
Neil was supported by another commenter, who said he hoped her only intention was to listen and enjoy the track and not to remix. “She been playing it in her snaps for past 2 weeks. Hope she just gwan vibe let’s ease off any remix,” he declared.
Crocodile Teeth was among three songs Minaj had remixed and placed on her mixtape, a re-release of her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty. At that time, producer Johnny Wonder, had told The Gleaner in an interview that Crocodile Teeth had “already blown up before they (Nicki’s team) wanted to go on it”.
In May, a day before the re-release of Beam me up Scotty, Minaj had mentioned on her live IG feed, that Crocodile Teeth was featured as a remix on her mixtape.
Some of Nicki’s fans though, upon the release of the remix, had felt that with the quality of the Crocodile Teeth riddim, and Skilli’s remarkable delivery of the lyrics, she had not done justice to the track with her verse, and that they still preferred the original, as she had watered down the song.
Skillibeng’s original Crocodile Teeth, which was considered a diss track aimed at his compatriot Intence, has cumulatively racked up more than 41 million views on YouTube, since the song was released more than a year ago. The remix with Minaj has accumulated 7.2 million views. In terms of chart performance, the remix had spent just one week on Billboard’s Global 200 charts, peaking at number 182 and one week at No. 100 on the Billboard Hot 100.
