Julian Marley Announces New EP ‘1692’ And Tour, Shares New Song ‘The Tide Is High’
Julian Marley has announced his upcoming EP titled 1692 due out in September via Monom Records.
The EP’s first single is a cover of The Paragons’ The Tide Is High (1967), which was written by band member and Reggae legend John Holt. The rocksteady classic was previously covered by American band Blondie, whose interpretation topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles chart in 1980. It was also covered by Gregory Issacs, The Mighty Diamonds, Maxi Priest, Atomic Kitten, Keri Hilson, Kardinal Offishall, and more.
Marley’s new interpretation brings the beloved classic back to its Jamaican roots, over a bouncy Dancehall beat supplied by producer and Monom Records chief Alexx Anteaus (Earth, Wind & Fire, Rolling Stones, Jah Vinci, Yaksta).
“I did ‘The Tide is High’ because I’m a fan of John Holt…because he’s one of my teachers. The song is a nice song…You know, it always gives me an uplifting feeling. We love to pay respect to our teachers and our elders. So, you know, this one is for uncle John, ya man – much blessings,” Marley said in a release.
Released today, The Tide is High‘s official music video was directed by Damanic Green and features Julian’s roots reggae tones and vocals against the backdrop of Jamaica’s historic Devon House, a heritage site built in 1881 by the first Jamaican black millionaire George Stiebel.
The 1692 EP will follow Julian’s 2019 Grammy-nominated album, As I Am, which had featured collaborations with Jamaican superstars like Shaggy, Beenie Man, Spragga Benz, and Addis Pablo.
Julian, who is the song of Bob Marley and Barbadian Lucy Pounder, is currently touring the United States until June 18, and onwards to Europe for the summer festival season.
