Dancehall star Masicka and his compatriot Bounty Killer have come up with some choice words to describe persons who engage in the use of the potentially destructive party drug, “Molly”, among the descriptions: “crackhead” and “duppy dolly”.

On Friday Bounty Killer shared a Star article regarding a molly dealer warning against the use of the drug, pointing out, among other things that: “it will make you lose yourself and knock yuh out”, and that there are people who take the drug and “do not know themselves”, among them girls who “take it when they are about to do music video shoots and started giving oral sex”.

Bounty, in sharing the post, noted that it was a “word of advice to the young or old”.

Soon after, Masicka read it and replied: “Any body pop molly a crack head naturally”, referencing the drug made by cooking cocaine powder with baking soda, and then breaking it into small pieces called “rocks”.

Amid a series of laughing emoticons between the two, Bounty responded: “@masickamusic, Str8 up bro a sum duppy dolly bout molly”.

The use of ‘Molly’, which is being glamorized in song by some Jamaican Trap artists, and which has been under the radar of the National Council for Drug Abuse for some time, is again becoming a cause for concern, as, among other things, it is being used to initiate the sexual exploitation of unsuspecting women, at parties, according to reports.

Molly, commonly known as ecstasy but with the scientific name methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA), is a synthetic, mind-altering drug with hallucinogenic effects, is produced in improvised labs and packaged for cultural appeal to youths, and is primarily used for recreational purposes, according to the National Council on Drug Abuse.

This is the second time in weeks that Bounty Killer has decried the use of Molly. Popcaan has also condemned the growing abuse of the illegal drug.

The drug had come in for scrutiny last week Sunday, after Dancehall artist Lincoln 3Dot pointed to its abundance at events which he attended in Jamaica.

Singjay Ce’Cile also concurred that the drug use was proliferating, and could get out of control in the near future.

However, some music fans have also pointed to the young artistes who have been promulgating the usage of Molly, among them Skeng, who teamed up with Navaz on the track Pop Molly with an accompanying video illustrating how to engage in the act.

Skeng has also mentioned the usage of Molly in Protocol, his collab with Tommy Lee Sparta, while his compatriot Intence, also sings about the use of Molly in his song Yahoo Boyz.

Approximately a month ago, the Jamaican police also raised an alarm that the drug, which is also known as ‘ecstasy’, was reaching into the hands of students who were attending ‘pill parties’ and consuming Molly in food and drinks.

Around the same time, popular Spanish Town-based music selector Neako Fire, warned to female party-goers to beware of men offering them drinks, as in a growing number of cases these free drinks were being spiked with Molly, by depraved persons and their cronies.

The Molly drug gives the desired effects of altered sensations, increased energy, empathy, and pleasure, and when ingested, the effects begin within 30 to 45 minutes and last for three to six hours.  However, it is often accompanied by “severe physical psychological consequences such as anxiety, panic attacks, tremors and hallucination, and is potentially lethal”.

Among the signs of intoxication are increased energy, sense of pleasure, sociability and feeling of euphoria, but the negative physical effects may include sweating, muscle tension, increased heart rate, suppressed appetite, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, grinding of teeth and jaw pain.

Chronic abuse may result in severe depression, anxiety, paranoia, apathy, distortions in perception and memory and suicidal tendencies.

The drug has the potential to impact the heart and blood via increased heart rate and blood pressure, possible cardiovascular failure induced by high body temperature and dehydration.  It can also result in irreparable brain damage, internal bleeding in the lungs, liver damage and jaundice, kidney failure and muscle tension, rigidity and breakdown of skeletal muscle.

Jamaica is a signatory to the 1988 United Nations (UN) Drug Convention and so the island prohibits the manufacture, sale, transport, and possession ecstasy and methamphetamine, and regulates the precursor chemicals used to produce them, which means that under the Jamaican law, possession of Molly is illegal and subject to criminal and civil penalties.
