Dancehall artist and songwriter Assailant, a former member of the Bounty Killer-led Alliance Music Group, was shot and killed in Los Angeles over the US independence weekend.

The Clarendon-born deejay, whose real name is Omar Thompson, was gunned down outside a house party in the Encino neighborhood in Los Angeles, California.  Assailant’s last posts on social media were taken at the event.

US authorities reported that the 37-year-old deejay was gunned down near his car in Encino, and that a search is on for those responsible.  The shooting unfolded around 11:40 p.m. Saturday in the 4500 block of Grimes Place.

It was there that officers arrived and found Assailant suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics also responded, and later pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Neighbours said the victim and the suspect were leaving a house party, and security footage from one of the neighbors’ house showed a line of cars leaving after shots were fired.  One neighbour attended to perform CPR on Assailant before the paramedics arrived.

The entertainment fraternity reacted in shock at his death, including Bounty Killer who wrote “RIP to a real G @assailant_alliance”

Shaggy, who worked closely with the artist, who was also his ghostwriter, posted: “WTF!” with an all-black post.

One user, presumably a close friend, wrote: “he (Assailant) bragged about you everyday for helping him do what he always wanted to do. Miami nights were epic the way he made us laugh..this hurts’.”

Assailant and Shaggy recently collaborated on a new single Party Up, which was released June 9 and produced by Popstyle Music.

Assailant was best known for his singles Mi Nuh Tek Talk and Dirty Money on the ATM Riddim.
