Popcaan Reflects On Journey To Stardom As He Marks 34th Birthday
As Dancehall deejay Popcaan marks his 34th birthday today, the Jamaican entertainer has been in a reflective mood. Poppy, who began making a name for himself when he joined Vybz Kartel’s Gaza Music Empire, took to Instagram to post a younger photo of himself before his rise to fame.
“It was never easy, it wasn’t always glowing, but I always put God 1st and believe in myself!!! My blessings can never be stopped!!! I was born to be Great. #GIHE,” he wrote.
“Life a the greatest thing naa mean!!! 🙏🏿🖤 I Appreciate the love worldwide,” he wrote in another IG post, as the birthday wishes poured in.
The Dun Rich deejay, whose real name is Andrae Sutherland, has been on a momentum for the past couple of weeks—landing gigs on the Afro Nation and Wireless Festivals.
His management company Since ‘93 made a post of their own hailing Popcaan for his recent successes with photo of him beside rappers Giggs and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

The deejay gave a stellar performance at Wireless, treating the hundreds of screaming fans to classics like Clarks (featuring Vybz Kartel).

Popcaan began his career officially in 2007 at a local jam he was attending known as “My Scheme,” where Kartel brought him into his group – the Portmore Empire.
In 2014, he released his debut studio album, Where We Come From under Mixpak Records. It peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart.
His sophomore album Forever was also done under the auspices of Mixpak Records, with production again being primarily handled by Dre Skull. Forever entered the Billboard 200 chart at No. 171 and had also peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae albums chart.
Popcaan then signed to Drake’s OVO Sound in late 2018, and one year later, he released his third album Vanquish on the Canadian label. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart, just as its predecessors did.
FIXTAPE, which dropped in August 2020 under OVO Sound, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. It also cracked the Billboard 200 chart with a significant showing at No. 94.
The deejay has also released two EPs; the first was Link Up – a joint effort with labelmate Preme that was released in November 2020. In February 2021, his Gyalentine’s EP was released with four tracks.
