Busy Signal Condemns Violence Against Women
Dancehall artist Busy Signal has condemned violence against women and is set to air his thoughts on the issue in a new track titled A Waste Man Kill Gyal.
The Gorilla Music-produced record, which cheekily besmirches men who abuse women, and casts them aside as “weak”, and “gyal strength criminal”, will be released in early 2023.
“I am extremely passionate about this topic because mi grow a certain way,” Busy told Ramona Samuels on Riddim FM. “I born come see my parents married and they are still together. I came from a woman, some man move like a hog dem come out of.”
The song’s social commentary comes in the wake of the almost back-to-back murders of two popular Instagram personalities, Donna-Lee Donaldson and Aneka Townsend, whose male counterparts have been charged with their deaths.
“Wi deh different parts of the world and hear what is happening in Jamaica, the Jamaica that we love. We can’t stand to hear that men are hurting, harming, and killing women,” Busy continued. “It is time for us to unite now brothers and sisters.”
The 43-year-old St. Ann native also spoke candidly on how violence affects us mentally. “If we were all to do a psychiatric evaluation many would be diagnosed with different mental illnesses, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; I for one have ADHD, but I express myself differently,” he admitted.
Busy Signal, whose real name is Reanno Gordon, came to prominence in 2003 with the hit song Step Out. His hit songs since then include Come Over (Missing You), Stay So, Bedroom Bully, Sweet Love (Night Shift), and Dolla Van.
The entertainer, whose mother is a Christian, revealed that he says a special prayer for his talent.
“It’s a blessing for me each day, I am just a living thanksgiving. I give extra thanks, more time when mi a pray, mi pray for my talent seperately than when mi a pray for my personal life, my team, my musicians, my bands, and everyone on a whole- I say a seperate prayer for my talent because mi see seh it’s just not the typical,” he said.
In addition to A Waste Man Kill Gyal, Busy has an upcoming collaboration with Nigerian artist Jeffwon titled Later.
