As the world marks the 78th birthday of the King of Reggae, February 6 has officially been proclaimed as Bob Marley Day in Toronto, Canada.

The proclamation was made by Mayor John Tory, that from this year forward, the city will continue to celebrate the Reggae legend each year.

Mayor Tory’s proclamation reads:

“Whereas February 6, we honour the music and legacy of Robert (Bob) Nesta Marley, an iconic musician, human rights advocate and an ambassador of peace.”

“After working as a solo artist, his musical breakthrough came when he and his fellow musicians formed the Wailers, incorporating elements of rockysteady and ska, and later adding reggae. It was this unique sound that captured the attention of music lovers worldwide.”

“Bob Marley would go on to achieve further fame after the Wailers disbanded, sharing his music along with his messages of tolerance, love, peace, and unity with his fans. He performed worldwide including here in Toronto, during performances at Massey Hall and Maple Leaf Gardens.”

“Bob’s unparalleled artistry and positive demeanor have influenced millions of fans and countless musicians, and his work continues to have an impact to this day. His music captivates listeners of all ages, inspiring and uplifting people from around the world.”

“The City of Toronto is one of the world’s great cities, and for more than 30 years, the City has been proud to annually celebrate Bob Marley’s timeless influence and legacy.”

“Now therefore, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 6, 2023 as “Bob Marley Day” in the City of Toronto.”

Meanwhile, some of the icon’s children and other members of the music fraternity have been paying tribute on social media.

His son, Ky-Mani, is among the lot.

“So much things I’d like to know, so much things to say but I’m gonna save it because I know we’ll be together some day. Happy Birthday Pops! #keepersofthelight,” he captioned a photo of Marley in his younger years.

The Reggae legend passed away in 1981 at just 36 years old after a battle with cancer.

His daughter Cedella also paid tribute.

“Each year we look forward to honoring my dada in a way that highlights his legacy and us inclusive of our extended family, friends, and fans from around the globe. With so much trouble in the world today, we decided ‘Easy Skanking 78’ as this year’s theme…Now, more than ever, we need to cool down the temperature and ‘take a lift.’ 💚 Blessed Earthstrong Dada… You are missed every day.”

Rohan Marley’s post tugged at some heartstrings.

“BLESSED EARTH STRONG MY BELOVED FATHER… TUFF GONG @bobmarley … there’s not enough words to express how much we want to share .. we only have tears #LIONORDER 👑 #GONGITES 🧬 “
