Jermaine Edwards, Rushawn’s ‘Beautiful Day’ Shines On The UK Singles Chart

Rushawn Ewears

Jamaican Gospel artist Jermaine Edwards is honored that the new remix of Beautiful Day, which features his protégé Rushawn Ewears, has debuted at No. 63 on the UK Singles chart dated March 2.

“It’s a great feeling of an accomplishment. It shows that people can remix versions of your song and they still do very well while it’s a part of my ownership,” Edwards told DancehallMag.

The new remix, which features fresh bars from UK rapper Prinz, was released on January 20, 2023. An official music video, released on February 2, begins with Ewears’ original clip back in primary school, before transitioning to a present-day setting in a church hall.

So far, the video has gained 4.7 million views on YouTube.

The Prinz remix was released under the technology-driven music label Robots + Humans, a division of Sony Music UK, with which Edwards and Ewears signed a monumental deal last month.

A six-year-old clip of Ewears giving his best version of Beautiful Day while attending the Top Hill Primary School in St. Elizabeth began making rounds on social media in late 2022, gaining him recognition globally. The deal with Sony Music UK that followed ensured that the youngster, who is now a student at B.B Coke High School, earns his royalties.

Edwards explained that he is in consistent communication with the rising star who is slowly, but surely, learning the ropes of the music industry.

“It’s not like you can leave Rushawn. As much as people knew him all over the world, they didn’t care about him from this perspective. Some of the guys that were using his music were happy that he was not on social media so they could do as they please, and Rushawn didn’t understand certain things from the business aspect; they’re from the deep country. So, I would still have to help them collect (royalties) and understand certain things about the business,” Edwards said.

Edwards revealed that an EP is in the pipeline for his mentee, as he prepares to launch a solo career.

“We are looking at an EP for him. We’re just looking forward to see what we can do for him from where he is. Seeing what we can do to launch his career. That video was from he was 10-years-old and after such a long time he has this new found success so it’s like something new just come back into his world. I’m helping him to write, sing, and record,” he told DancehallMag.

In an exclusive interview in January, Sony Music A&R Milo Saville noted that the deal was in the best interest of both parties.

“The main thing is that the licensing (and) mastering are a hundred percent Jermaine’s and Rushawn’s. We’re just licensing off them to work the record in the best way possible, and it’s a case of them being yeah, the centre of it all. It’s all reflecting back onto them. It’s their record,” he said at the time.

“In terms of the specifics of deal, I doubt it’s my place to say. It’s a license agreement so all of the masters are belonging to Jermaine and Rushawn which I think is important.”
