Vybz Kartel, Masicka Meet Again For ‘Shootaz’
Six years after Infrared , Portmore natives Masicka and Vybz Kartel are back with another collaboration titled Shootaz, produced by Adidjahiem Records.
The song, which premiered on March 3, overflows with as much violent lyrical imagery as it can hold, and it carries all the other hallmarks of a typical badman anthem. Its lyrical content aside, the song is also a clear flex by Masicka and Vybz Kartel. Both artists manage to seamlessly introduce a number of varying flows to impressive effect, which ultimately rids the song of any monotony.
While all that’s being accomplished, the song still manages to come across as a lyrically inspired project, and not as an unfocused attempt at trying to please everyone who hears it. Despite the variety to be found on the track, it’s a masterful example of confident experimentation between seasoned veterans.
The song is stretched across a relatively up-tempo and percussion-heavy beat, incorporating a few heavy chords for dramatic effect.
The collaboration comes at pivotal points in both men’s lives and career.
Masicka was recently signed to Def Jam Recordings – a career changing move by the former independent artist. Despite many believing the move was a bad one by Masicka, Chairman and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, Tunji Balogun, disagreed.
He had explained that: “Def Jam has always been the home for great artists across the wide spectrum of Black music, and Masicka is very much emblematic of that vision… Masicka’s versatility and unique sonic perspective has the potential to impact markets all over the world. It feels like the beginning of something very special. We’re excited to welcome him to our Def Jam family.”
Meanwhile, Vybz Kartel, while still being a prolific artist behind bars, encountered a major hiccup in his quest for freedom, particularly in light of the Privy Council’s recent ruling. On that matter, an application to introduce fresh evidence to overturn his murder conviction was denied.
