Premiere: Romain Virgo Returns With New Video For ‘Driver’

We’ve heard him sing about being a woman’s Soul Provider , and now Romain Virgo is positioning himself as her “driver.”

That’s the name of his first single in 16 months, slated for release on all streaming platforms tomorrow (March 24) through VP Records and available now on YouTube. (Watch the official video premiere above).

Speaking to DancehallMag, Virgo described Driver as the perfect follow-up to his 2021 impresser Good Woman , adding, “I definitely can’t wait for the supporters of my music to hear what the new music we’ve been producing between that time to now sounds like, and Driver is one of them that defines how beautiful and powerful the music is.”

Beautiful indeed as the groovy number, produced by reggae/dancehall powerhouse Donovan ‘Don Corleon’ Bennett, caters to a woman’s desire to feel cherished, prioritized, and protected by her man, and Virgo’s soulful and sensual vocals are the icing on the cake.

The latter ties in with his hopes for the record, which is accompanied by SAMO-directed visuals that show his ability to make his love interest the center of his universe while navigating the nuances of stardom.

“I hope that Driver won’t stop at all, even when the song gets to the top lol. I honestly just hope it is received by the music lovers with the same enthusiasm we all feel as a team and that it will become everyone’s favorite song.”

“Every man should aim to also be a woman’s number one back-scratcher lol,” he joked. “On a serious note though, behind the titles of my songs lies everything else I’d want to say and be for that special woman, and Driver is no different. So, it’s just for everyone to listen beyond the chorus in each song to get a clearer idea of who I am and my true intentions.”

Written by producer/songwriter Matthew ‘Keely Keyz’ Keaveny, the song’s story is truly a full-circle moment. Back in 2011, Virgo expressed wanting to work with Bennett, which finally manifested when the two met at Florida’s Bay Eight Recording Studio in November 2022.

“This came about when I was in Miami,” Bennett told DancehallMag.

“I seen him and we start talking about linking up and doing something, and we just went from there. I got a lot of respect for him as an artist and as an individual. (He’s) very easy to work with and (has) no ego whatsoever.”

Virgo spent much of last year delighting live audiences. After a few shows in Jamaica, he kicked off a five-week summer tour that began alongside Christopher Martin in New York for Jerk Festival and Belgium for Reggae Geel. He then wrapped up the following 17 dates in the US as the solo headliner.

Fans can anticipate new show dates in the Caribbean and the U.S. in the coming weeks.
