Spice Thanks The Plastic Surgeon Who Saved Her, Responds To Doubters
Following her much-publicized near-death experience, Dancehall Queen Spice has not only continued her show of gratitude for life, but has also embarked on a mission to dispel rumors surrounding her health scare and subsequent surgeries.
The 40-year-old took to her Instagram page earlier today to shower Medical Doctor and Celebrity Plastic Surgeon, Nicholas Jones (@drnipandtuck), with praises. Jones, who operates out of Atlanta, Georgia, was among the host of doctors deployed to save the entertainer’s life after she made it to Atlanta from the Dominican Republic.
“I know my story is long but I’m just so sooo grateful to still be here. I have to keep showing gratitude and this one is a big time THANK YOU to this surgeon who accepted me in Atlanta when I had my near-death experience in D.R and my case seemed hopeless,” she began.
“I walked into his office in Atlanta this morning and he said, ‘Wow you look alive’… compared to how he saw me in the hospital last year after I came back to life, swollen in bed and couldn’t walk…”
Spice continued: “So FYI, I was taken back to Atlanta directly to the hospital where this surgeon @drnipandtuck did another surgery on me immediately because the sepsis infection was so bad after the hernia happened. My chest was left opened and he had to do an immediate procedure as I landed. So, I basically did 3 surgeries in 2 weeks. @drnipandtuck Thank you for walking me through this entire ordeal until I’m now healed. We thought I would have needed skin grafting but my wound is finally closed. YOU ARE AMAZING and you have a beautiful and welcoming staff. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. Lots of love. I had to come hug you this morning.”
In March, after a rumor-filled and extended absence from social media, the Guh Down Deh artist dramatically returned to the platforms, expressing to her fans that she wished to be transparent and vulnerable about what had happened to her.
“I died in the Dominican Republic,” she told them via a candid Instagram Q&A session. The singer had explained that she suffered a number of medical complications, ranging from intestines that erupted and protruded through a hernia, all the way to the incredibly lethal sepsis shock.
She shared: “Thank God I had the hernia because it erupted outside of my muscle wall. So, if I didn’t have the hernia which is that space in the muscle, the intestine would’ve erupted inside of me. When it erupted, it started to poison my body, and it sent me into a sepsis shock and the sepsis is the poisoning that kills a lot of people that’s why I’m just so grateful to be here.”
Spice’s show of gratitude to Jones and his medical staff drew similar sentiments from some fans, while stirring up skepticism in others.
One fan noted: “Your name is GRACE for a reason.”
Another explained: “You’re blessed to be alive. Sepsis is no joke. Hallelujah.”
One fan, username asaki_47, seemed to take note of the overwhelming number of probing questions and comments, and came to Spice’s defense, posting: “You owe no one proof. Once you know Jah was [on] the battle with you, that’s all that matters. God is the boss. You are here to talk about it. It’s real.”
Spice acknowledged asaki_47’s sentiments in her response to the comment: “Amen. And nuff a dem a no wah mi praise mi God.”
Other fans, however, were not as convinced that Spice was truly being forthcoming in her posts.
According to one comment, “You had the plastic surgery and got infected. Just tell the truth.”
Stated another comment: “So, was the hernia caused by complications of the cosmetic surgery? Now that you have posted this, I’m assuming it’s open for discussion, especially considering @drnipandtuck is a celebrity plastic surgeon who specializes in BBL and reconstruction. Or [are] we gonna continue with ‘It was just a hernia that got infected and caused you sepsis. Any nurses in these comments know that hernias are very common when doing any abdominal surgery… but hey, you still look good. Your fans will respect and still love you. It’s the honesty they would appreciate.”
The cynical comments were largely ignored by the So Mi Like It singer, but one in particular, by blackbeauty288, caught the Dancehall Queen’s attention.
The comment quizzed: “But he is a plastic surgeon… so how did he save you?”
Spice was clear in her response: “@blackbeauty288 I came in on a Air Ambulance and a Plastic Surgeon was called because a regular doctor alone couldn’t be on my case. He had to remove the staples from my chest. FYI, since you need it, I actually had over 14 different doctors, surgeons, practitioners, infectiologist, nutritionist, amongst others, that I can’t even call the names – people who specialize in organs and intestines that were assigned to my case alone, and he happens to be only one of them. Any other information you need, let me know.”
The swarm of skeptical comments prompted the Grammy-nominated artist to make another post addressing the doubts.
With a photo of herself in all blue, coupled with screenshots of a few comments, including @blackbeauty288’s, Spice announced: “ATTENTION!! Swipe and let’s be very clear. I’m not forcing anyone to believe my story. Y’all know where the unfollow button is. Me alone know what I went through and I won’t stop giving GOD ALL THE PRAISE. Wait until I go back to DR to thank the people over there who rushed me to the hospital and the surgeons over there who bussed my chest open to save my life. Some of y’all already believe what y’all made up so even if I tell you that a yoke is inside of a egg, UNU STILL AGO SAY A LIE.”
The post was capped off with a line from one of her latest songs, ‘God A Bless Me’: “If mi tell them say a this mi know dem stull a say a that.”
On April 11, she’s expected to release her third song in two months, one titled Queen of the Dancehall.
