Shenseea Wishes Victoria Monét’s ‘On My Mama’ Was Her Song
Shenseea has been open about wanting to find a new sound, and her current playlist is giving insight into what that could be.
In a recent ‘get ready with me’ Instagram livestream, the Waistline artist played some of her present favs, but couldn’t get enough of R&B singer-songwriter Victoria Monét’s On My Mama .
“This song is fire too,” Shenseea said. “I wish I sang this song.”
By the time it hit the singalong chorus, Shenseea pulled it up in true Jamaican style.
“Oouu, I f**king love this song,” she said. “That sh*t is insane. Victoria did that sh*t bro. I love this song.”
The lead single from Monét’s new Jaguar II album, On My Mama is a total ‘I look fly’ anthem for the girlies and gents, complemented by swagged-out visuals with TikTok-trending dance choreography by Sean Bankhead.
As Shenseea hit the replay a second time, a fan asked if she’d hop on the remix, with another suggesting that she should try to create a similar song.
In a livestream last month, Shenseea said she was “trying to find the sound that complements me perfectly” since relocating to the United States.
A collaboration with Monét wouldn’t be farfetched, considering Shenseea’s growing roster of features with artists like Kanye West, Megan Thee Stallion, The Chainsmokers and Masego. But the Interscope Records artist was also highlighted by Monét in an Instagram slide on Tuesday, featuring celebs like Ciara and Keke Palmer, all showing love to On My Mama.
“I am so in awe of all of you beautiful black queens,” Monét captioned.
“Thank you for your out loud support of me!! It really means the world to me 🥹🎉✨.”
With the music video including a scene that paid homage to Ciara’s Goodies era, several users suggested that Ciara would be great for a remix. Shenseea’s name was also mentioned.
“Ciara & Shenseea would sound so good on the remix!!” one person wrote.
Another chimed, “You and Shenseea plzzzz.. that would be fire! Party Girls remix.”
Party Girls is another song on the album, previously released with reggae artist Buju Banton.
Ciara is apparently open to the collab, based on comments made in a recent interview on Stepping into the Shaderoom.
“I love her new video, On My Mama. She’s so talented and I know she’s been around for so long. Her pen game is crazy. Shout out to the girls – the Victorias of the world – that’s talented across the board, but that (a collab) could be super dope.”
Shenseea’s last female collaboration was the controversial 2022 Lick single with Megan Thee Stallion, which samples soca singer Denise Belfon’s Work.
The saucy track was at the center of a US$10M copyright infringement lawsuit filed last year by Work producer Anastas ‘Pupa Nas-T’ Hackett. He told DancehallMag that he reached a settlement with Shenseea and her label in March for an undisclosed amount.
