Grammy Awards 2024: Buju Banton, Beenie Man, And Collie Buddz Albums Among Nominees For Best Reggae Album
Buju Banton’s Born for Greatness, Beenie Man’s Simma, Collie Buddz’s Cali Roots Riddim 2023, Burning Spear’s No Destroyer, and Julian Marley & Antaeus’ Colors of Royal are the albums nominated in the Best Reggae Album category at the upcoming 66th Annual Grammy Awards, to be held in February 2024.
The announcement was made today (November 10) during the Recording Academy’s annual nominations live-stream event.
According to the Academy, the Reggae category “recognizes excellence in albums of reggae music, including roots reggae, dancehall and ska music”. The nominations and award are bestowed to “albums containing greater than 75% playing time of new reggae recordings.”
The albums’ featured artists, producers, and engineers are also eligible for nomination only if they contributed to more than 50% of playing time on the project, the Academy stipulates.
This is Beenie Man’s fourth nomination, following Many Moods Of Moses, The Doctor, and Art and Life, which nabbed the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album back in 2001. Simma, which features collaborations from Shaggy, Sean Paul, Louie Culture, Superstar, HoodCelebrityy, Charly Blacks, Dexta Daps, Shenseea as well as international stars Stonebwoy and Mya, is Beenie Man’s 17th studio album.
Following the announcement, Beenie Man expressed joy at being named among the nominees. The entertainer said he was feeling “incredibly grateful and honored to be nominated by the prestigious Grammy Awards for our SIMMA Album in the Best Reggae category” and said the recognition is a :testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that went into creating this music.”
“Thank you to the Grammy committee for acknowledging our efforts, and to all our amazing fans for your unwavering support. This nomination is for you,” his post on Instagram read.
Three years after his last nomination in 2020, Buju Banton again makes the cut with his project, Born For Greatness. Released on September 8, the 17-track album is Banton’s 12th studio project and his seventh nomination overall. Banton previously won the award with his album, Before The Dawn.
Meanwhile, Burning Spear earned his 13th nomination for his album, No Destroyer. He has two wins under his belt, including Jah Is Real over a decade ago.
Julian Marley and Antaeus have also been nominated for the project Colors of Royal. Marley was previously nominated twice for Best Reggae Album with his albums As I Am and Awake.
Collie Buddz has earned his first nomination with the Cali Roots Riddim 2023, a 23-track riddim compilation which features Busy Signal on A Thousand Times, Gondwana on Do It Right, SOJA on Press Remix, The Movement on Open The Door.
The final round of voting will take place between December 14, 2023 and January 4, 2024. The winners in each Grammy category will be announced on February 4, 2024 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The show will be broadcast on CBS and Paramount+, with the annual Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony preceding the event.
