Ice Spice Previews New Song Sampling Sean Paul’s ‘Gimme The Light’ During Her Coachella Debut
Bronx rapper Ice Spice took the Coachella stage for the first time on Saturday night, turning up the heat with a fiery performance packed with hits and an unreleased track that samples Sean Paul‘s 2002 track Gimme The Light.
Dressed to impress under a giant, inflatable version of herself, the 24-year-old dominated the Sahara stage with a fast-paced setlist that included songs like Gangsta Boo, Barbie World, Boy’s a Liar Pt.2, Karma, and Deli.
She also treated the crowd to her recent single with the unforgettable title, Think U The Sh*t (F*rt), before igniting the festival with the brand new, rapid-fire track that featured Sean Paul’s vocals in the intro and outro and a sample of the Buzz riddim throughout.
The song is expected to appear on the rapper’s upcoming album, Y2K, due out later this year.
Paul’s Gimme The Light was the first single from his Grammy Award-winning Dutty Rock album, which helped establish him as a successful and flexible Dancehall artist on the global stage.
The song peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the UK Singles chart and was a top-20 hit in Canada, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Gimme The Light is certified Silver in the UK for sales exceeding 200,000 units and Gold in Canada.
The official video has over 77 million views on YouTube, while the song has over 72 million plays on Spotify.
Produced by the duo Black Shadow Records (Troyton Rami and Roger Mackenzie), the Buzz riddim also featured Mad Cobra’s Press Trigger, another song that made waves, Sizzla’s Pump Up, Beenie Man’s Toy Friend, Singer J’s Buss Your Gun, Mr. Vegas’ A Nuh Di Same, Elephant Man’s Haters Wanna War, and Capleton’s I Love To See.
Meanwhile, American singer Victoria Monét also ‘took the Coachella crowd to Jamaica’ when she included Mad Cobra‘s Flex (1992) and Sister Nancy‘s Bam Bam (1982) in a dance routine during her set on Sunday in the Mojave Tent.
Monét, who took home three Grammy Awards earlier this year, including Best New Artist and Best R&B Album, has previously collaborated with Buju Banton on the songs, Party Girls and Body Touching Body.
