Ghostface Killah Samples A Tenor Saw Dubplate, Recruits Serani For New Album ‘Set The Tone’

American rapper and Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah sampled a Tenor Saw dubplate and enlisted No Games artist Serani for two songs on his new album, Set The Tone, released on May 10 via Mass Appeal Records.

The first song—Champion Sound, featuring NY-based Dancehall artist Beniton and produced by Ghostface and Danny Caiazzo—includes elements of Winston Riley’s bass-heavy Stalag 17 riddim throughout, and Tenor Saw’s raw vocals hailing the Stereo Mars (Sturmars) sound system for which he did the original dubplate.   

Dubbed On Top Of The World, Saw had performed the dubplate at a People’s National Party (PNP) rally in 1986.

On the Stalag 17, Tenor Saw also recorded his biggest hit, Ring The Alarm (1985), and the song Fever (1985).

He passed away in 1988, two weeks after a hit-and-run accident in Texas. Saw was 21-years-old.

Ghostface’s 19-track project also includes the song Shots, which features Dancehall artist Serani and rapper Busta Rhymes.

Other notable guest appearances include Kanye West, Method Man, Jim Jones, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, and Nas.

Ghostface, who took to Instagram to celebrate the release, said he was thankful for his collaborators.

“Thank you to everyone who helped put this project together and every talented artist that jump in the fire with me !!” he wrote in the caption.
