Shenseea Says She Should Be Classified As A “Dancehall Pop” Or “Reggae Pop” Artist

Jamaican singer Shenseea believes her unique style might deserve a label like “Dancehall pop” or “Reggae pop” artist.

During an interview with Spotify for its “Making It With Spotify” feature, the Blessed singer noted the challenges that artists face in maintaining their signature style. “Artists these days you do one style they’re like ‘okay we know you for this style,'” she explains, “but you have that style for too long they’re like ‘okay now we’re bored.'”

“And I like challenges I like to embrace things that are new to see how creative I can get to push myself past something that I’ve never done before,” she continued.

To reflect this artistic blend, Shenseea suggested a new classification for her sound: “Maybe I should classify myself as like a dancehall pop or reggae pop artist,” she pondered. “You know? To make it still be like an infusion and still feels authentic in a way because that’s what my music is.”

Beyond genre labels, Shenseea also told Spotify that she has her sights set on achieving global superstardom.

“I would say I’m successful when I have a diamond record, a Grammy. To fill out a stadium, that’s one of my ultimate dreams. Everything that I’ve just listed that’s what inspires me to keep on creating. Until I get those I will never stop creating,” she said.

“I want to be a Global Superstar that’s how I see myself I want to make music that appeals to everybody I want to make the world happy and Heal the World with my music,” she added.

One of her latest releases is Honey Boy, a collaboration with German producer/DJ Purple Disco Machine, Swedish Singer Benjamin Ingrosso and American guitarist Nile Rodgers. The song, which has racked up over five million plays on Spotify, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Sweden Songs Chart, dated May 18, 2024.

Her sophomore album, Never Gets Late Here, will be released on May 24 and include songs such as Flava with Coi Leray, Red Flag with Anitta, and Work Me Out with Wizkid.

The tracks Hit and Run with Masicka, which has over 45 million views on YouTube, Die For You, and Neva Neva have already been released.

Ahead of the album, she previewed another single, Dolla, on “COLORSxSTUDIOS” on May 13. The song, which is said to blend reggae, R&B, pop, and hip-hop “to intoxicating effect” explores prioritizing success and independence over romance.

Never Gets Late Here will follow her debut Alpha (2022) under Interscope Records/Rich Immigrants, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
