Dancehall newcomer Nhance said he grew up poor even though his mom Gaza Sheba was part of the Vybz Kartel-led Gaza camp and was featured on hits like You and Him Deh and Like Christmas.

Nhance, who has recorded his own songs such as Mind Set and Life featuring Chronic Law, said his journey was far from the glitz and glamour. “My mother no mek nothing outta music bro, nothing at all, mi still grow up inna poverty, mi still grow up poor, mi still grow up inna rent house, mi still grow up wid bed inna living room fi mi likkle sister sleep pon cause a two room, that’s why me a push it so hard,” he said during an interview on Entertainment Report with Anthony Miller.

Despite the absence of tangible wealth, he affirmed that his mother has offered him a wealth of knowledge to guide him as he navigates his music journey.

“She tell me one thing inna music business, you can’t too trust everybody and mi start out a trust everybody weh come round me and a now mi a learn, mi did need fi listen to tha one deh, mi trust fren round me, mi see mi trust man round me a sing up bay song round dem and dem a collect money fi show and dem thing deh and a tell me say yow, yeah man mi just a do it fi a strength. Yeah you ago feel a way bout it at first but then you ago realise say you haffi go through it, everybody go through it , everybody have a story like that because it is true , a part a the hussle,” he said.

Readily accepting the responsibilities that come with being an artist, Nhance reasoned that he is careful with the content he puts out because of the effect it may have on children who see him as a role model.

“Me a represent fi what mi know bout. Right now my set a generation easier fi accept the slacker things dem but my thing will grow because it a grow, mi naw follow some likkle idiot artiste who mi hear a say a parents fi grow pickney,” he said.

“Listen you will grow up inna your house wid your parents and your parents is not your role model, remember you know your parents lifestyle, you know say your parents poor, you naw go a idolize your parents , yah go idolize somebody you see pon the internet weh live this kinda lifestyle so whatever dem put out a that dem accept cause you will have a youth out deh weh a Nhance him say no matter how him mother wah beat him or him father a Nhance him say, whatever Nhance say,” he added.
