Ce’Cile And Vershon Feud Over His Comments About Popcaan’s ‘Selfishness’
Dancehall singjay Ce’Cile ignited a heated feud with Vershon, following the Inna Real Life singer’s most recent remarks about Popcaan being a selfish man.
Ce’Cile, taking offense to the comments, asserted in an Instagram post on Wednesday that Vershon was ungrateful, escalating a war of words between the two. She shared an excerpt from a video of a 2015 Reggae Sumfest performance, in which Popcaan called up Vershon to the stage to perform.
The post seemed to imply that Vershon was an unknown then and that Popcaan had used the platform to introduce the youngster, who, at that time, had already gotten his big break with the mega-hit Inna Real Life.
“I’d encourage every artist to stop promote people you don’t sign!!! As an established artist recognize the value in calling up younger less established acts on stage for the sake of kindness… endorsing them, putting them in ur music videos , collaborating with them,” Ce’Cile stated.
Ce’Cile further asserted that Dancehall giants such as Bounty Killer ought not to have helped other emerging talents unless those artists were signed to their labels.
“We don’t take music business serious in this place. Man like bounty and beenie and others have done a lot and should never have done it unless it was for acts signed to them. In the long run most of them turn round and say you never did anything for them. And say you badmind dem!!! And how u selfish! Because they will always want you to do something more!! And the more successful you become a di more them expect u fi drag dem like handbag bakka u,” she said.
She then transcribed the words Popcaan used to introduce Vershon to the Reggae Sumfest audience:
However, Vershon, having gotten wind of Ce’Cile’s post, went on the counterattack, slamming her for lacking objectivity and questioning the integrity of her statements in a lengthy written rebuttal.
“Mi wah kno wah the video have to do with di point yah try mek!” he said of the Reggae Sumfest video Ce’Cile had shared.
“Look how much artist Popcaan call up pon stage but yet a me yu post….. ask Popcaan if mi ever ask him fi a callob yet or any kind of favor. When di youth call me up on stage mi did already established and neva did a look nothing!…. Ye mi seh di dog selfish but u did hear mi seh him badmind?” he asked in a question posed at Ce’Cile.
As he continued his onslaught on the Manchester native, Vershon pointed out that her own comments reeked of covetousness and unsupportiveness.
“Mi sure seh pon every interview mi show mi appreciation even if it was the smallest…. Because mi alway see him as a bredrin……. And anotha thing, Big head gyal yu nuh realize seh badmind\selfishness deh ina yu post? Yu ah encourage established artist nuh fi call up younger artist on stage like seh dat nuh always been we culture regardless of signing or not!” he declared.
Vershon did not stop there. He told Ce’Cile that a major part of Dancehall culture was that more established and seasoned artists provided support to their younger counterparts by introducing them to new audiences.
“A bigger artist calling up a young artist has always been a positive thing and a common thing in the music industry….. If Bounty Killa did a sign every artist before him call dem up maybe we wouldn’t have mavado and vybz kartel and if we neva have Kartel we wouldn’t have popcaan and if we neva have popcaan YOU wouldn’t ova deh a chat so like u trupid!” he stated.
“But since a signing a di problem, Popcaan neva sign Quada???? So weh him a do fi him now??? Sometimes it better unu stay shut up if unu nah have nothing weh mek sense fi seh…. Yu forget seh yah artist? How much years yu deh unruly and nav a callob? Sit down 🪑 and be quiet 🤐. #FiABigWoman #Idiot #Corruption @badgyalcecile” he ended.
As he continued his defense, Vershon also rubbished the video Ce’Cile posted of Popcaan calling him onstage at Reggae Sumfest 2016, pointing out that by that time, he was already an established artist and that what Popcaan had done was to help him get on stage in the interest of time, as time had caught up on the event’s organizers.
He also shared a clip of himself on the Dancehall Hot Seat podcast paying his respects to Popcaan for graciously calling him onstage at Reggae Sumfest 2016 but also asserting that he disapproved of some of the artist’s ways.
Vershon also posted a screen shot of his breakout song, Inna Real Life, which was released on June 2, 2015, followed by another of the Reggae Sumfest performance, which took place just over a year later.
