Govana Says New Album ‘Legacy’ Shows Why He Is The Bridge Between Old And New School Dancehall
Dancehall artist Govana says his second album, Legacy, shows why he is the bridge between old school and new school through the collaborations on the project.
The deejay was speaking to DancehallMag at the album launch on Thursday at the Courtyard at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston.
“With Legacy, I tried my best to keep within the theme. So, with Skeng and Jada Kingdom, me and them have history… it’s a riddim that I produced that buss Skeng, and then Jada Kingdom, I was the first big artist to collaborate with her. I believed in them from the jump. Then, Popcaan, Mavado and Aidonia they all influenced my music. It all ties into legacy… I was the bridge between Jada and Skeng and Popcaan and Mavado and Aidonia. That’s what I think I signify in the industry. I am the bridge between the then and the now,” he said.
Released on June 28, the album was executively produced by Chimney Records, but features a host of other contributions from Raheef Music Group, Crash Dummy, Emudio Records, Attomatic Records/ Hempton Music, and Daseca Productions.
The album was narrowed down to 12 tracks, but approximately 70 were recorded as prospects over the last year. Fans will get a chance to hear a few more soon.
“When the deluxe is released, it’s gonna ultimately be down to 17. So now, we’ve released 12, and the reason why we decided to release in stages is because we want every song to get as much justice as possible versus releasing 17 tracks where people can just pick what they want, and then some of them will be discarded, unfortunately, because that’s how albums naturally go,” Govana told DancehallMag.
Govana’s first album, Humans and Monsters Are Not The Same (H.A.M.A.N.T.S), was released in January 2020. That project featured Taurus Riley, Protoje, and Dre Island, who assisted the musician in bringing his vision to life.
In the meantime, Govana says that he’s looking to further establish his name globally with the latest album. He says he isn’t paying keen attention to album sales.
“I definitely want to garner new fans. Mi nah guh tell yuh seh mi aguh get the greatest sales and all of that, because we know at the end of the day album sales go off what’s current and mi been away fi a minute so mi cyaa come tell yuh seh… even though Govana aguh always be one a dem name deh dem man deh a general. At the end of the day, we know seh we have a whole heap a work fi put in and we’re starting right here.”
