Vybz Kartel

Vybz Kartel has undoubtedly influenced society in many ways through popular culture, but he is also confident that he would be an effective Member of Parliament.

The entertainer took to (formerly Twitter) on Friday night to share his thoughts about entering representational politics to prove to citizens that their quality of life could be improved.

“… Mi neva have nuh political aspirations growing up, but a one ting mek mi coulda run fi MP inna di future (and it’s) jus’ to show di people dem dem seh, yo, unuh life betta. Politicians can duh more, yuh know dem ways deh?” he asked rhetorically in the one-minute clip.

He went on to say that the idea was triggered by observations of outcries from some citizens for proper infrastructure.

“Mi nuh know weh mi did a watch pon di internet, an’ mi a medz it an’ mi seh bl**dcl**t, inna dem day an’ age yah, Jamaica people still a block road an’ a protest ‘bout basic tings,” he added, listing some of the urgent needs being complained about are proper roads, electricity and piped water.

“Whole heap a school; basic school, primary school deevn have running water (and) proper sewage system. Dem ting deh a basic tings weh shouldn’t even be nuh problem. A modern time now, we inna di 21st century. Dem ting deh shouldn’t be nuh problem,” Vybz Kartel reasoned.

Recently, Kartel has engaged with political figures, including including Opposition in the Belize House of Representatives and the leader of the Belize United Democratic Party, Shyne, as well as the Mayor of Panama Mizrachi Matalon. The former shared in the joy of Kartel’s release from prison after almost 13 years, and encouraged society, particularly the youths to take a page out of the deejay’s book where resilience is concerned.

In 2022, Vybz Kartel released a track called Politics in which he criticized the government for failing to deliver on its promises to voters.

“…Election dem have we spell bout (Politics)
Tek wi vote and run outta town (Politics)
Four year dеm come back around (Politics)
Like we a play “Lost and Found” (Politics)…”he sang in part.

Some users have encouraged the Fever deejay to pursue politics, given his reasoning about Jamaica’s rate of development.

“Go fi it mi General. #MrPalmer for MP. You is it deh? Dem dead,” said @fearlesssolja.

@spikes_dancer added, “DO IT LIKE NIKE KING! Cause you have a better understanding of ppl! 💯🤴🏽💪🏽🇯🇲💰🍾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥”
