Shenseea Sets Her Sights On Grammy Glory: “It Has Been A Childhood Dream For Me”

Jamaican star Shenseea has set her sights on one of music’s highest honors: a Grammy Award. The Blessed singer recently shared her ambitions during an appearance on “The Really Good Podcast” with American influencer Bobbi Althoff.

“I think I have to get a Grammy, because it has been a childhood dream for me,” Shenseea explained. “You know, just growing up— watching MTVVH1, BET all of that and seeing the award shows, I think from a longer time I was like, ‘I have to get one of those when I get older.’ It’s not even that I’m materialistic; it’s just a dream to have one. I’ve achieved almost everything that I wanted to in my life, in my career thus far.”

The artist’s goals extend beyond the Grammy. “So, Grammy is up next, and I’d like to have a diamond record too,” she added, also expressing her desire to embark on a stadium tour.

Shenseea’s sophomore album, Never Gets Late Here, is among the 75 projects that have been submitted for consideration in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category at the upcoming 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

Additionally, several of her singles have been submitted across various categories:

  • Flava with rapper Coi Leray was submitted to three categories, namely ‘Record Of The Year,’ ‘Song Of the Year,’ and ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’
  • Work Me Out with Wizkid was submitted for ‘Best African Music Performance’
  • Her cover of Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry — which appeared on the Bob Marley: One Love – Music Inspired by the Film album — has also been submitted for ‘Best Global Music Performance.’ The album, curated by the Marley estate, is also vying for ‘Best Reggae Album.’

First-round voting will conclude on October 15, before the nominations are announced on November 8.

Shenseea’s previous Grammy nod came from her two contributions to Kanye West’s Donda album, which was nominated for ‘Album Of The Year’ in 2022.

The singer is already making strides towards her diamond record dream. Her Shenyeng Anthem recently achieved Silver certification in the United Kingdom, while her collaboration on Kanye West’s Pure Souls earned Gold certification in the US. Blessed is also currently certified Gold in Canada.

During the interview with Althoff, Shenseea also touched on some personal matters, revealing that she is from a family of long-lasting marriages and hopes to tie the knot when she is around 35 (for context, she’s 28).

She emphasized the importance of a lengthy courtship, stating she would need to be with someone for a decade before marriage—five years dating and five years engaged. Her rationale was that she didn’t want a repeat of the failed relationship she had with her child’s father.

“If I don’t find that person— even though I don’t think you can ever find that perfect person to have kids with because people change after you give birth— I know from experience. Like, my child’s father and I, we were really close, like twins, until we had a kid… it went opposite,” she said.

She also said she is not in a committed relationship and is currently “having fun, especially because the last two years were so difficult.”
