Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill’s ‘Turn Your Lights Down Low’ Certified Silver In The UK

Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill’s Turn Your Lights Down Low has officially achieved Silver certification in the UK. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) announced on Friday, February 14 that the song surpassed 200,000 units in sales and streaming, as measured by the Official Charts Company.
The 1999 remix of Turn Your Lights Down Low, produced by Stephen Marley, appeared on Marley’s Chant Down Babylon, a project that featured remixes and covers of the Reggae legend’s songs by contemporary artists such as Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes, Rakim, Steven Tyler, and The Roots.
The track, which featured Hill’s soulful vocals and a rap verse, became one of the most commercially successful Bob Marley remixes, peaking at No. 1 on the UK R&B Chart, No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart, and No. 4 on the Billboard US Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.
In addition to its UK Silver status, the remix has achieved Gold certification in France (250,000 units) and Sweden (15,000 units) and Platinum certification in New Zealand (20,000 units).
In 1999, it also featured on the soundtrack for the film, The Best Man.
An accompanying music video, directed by Francis Lawrence, was released in 1999. Set in Jamaica, the video opens with scenes of children playing soccer, followed by shots of nightlife, a recording studio where Hill performs, and party scenes featuring Hill and Rohan Marley, Bob Marley’s son, with whom she shares five children.
The song later earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards.
This certification brings Bob Marley’s total certified songs in the UK to 16.
Three Little Birds leads the pack, having reached 3X Platinum status (1.8 million units), while Is This Love and Could You Be Loved each achieved 2X Platinum, surpassing 1.2 million units sold.
Marley’s other Platinum hits in the UK are No Woman, No Cry, Jamming, One Love, and Buffalo Soldier, each exceeding 600,000 units.
He currently holds Gold certifications (400,000 units) for Stir It Up, Waiting In Vain, and Redemption Song, and Silver (200,000 units) for Get Up, Stand Up, I Shot The Sheriff, Satisfy My Soul.
Natural Mystic is also currently certified Silver, while a 2016 remix of Is This Love, featuring LVNDSCAPE and Bolier, is currently certified Gold.
