He later took to his Instagram stories, where he showed a snap of himself at what appeared to be a street party at an undisclosed location in Kingston, Jamaica.
Gates in a follow-up story snap thanked fans for the birthday wishes saying, “Everybody that wished me a happy birthright, happy anniversary, my journey around the sun, I thank you, I love you all.”
Early in his career, during an interview with Complex Magazine in 2013, Gates said he had always been interested in Jamaica and Jamaican culture, noting that there was a period in which all he listened to was Jamaican music.
“I was always interested in [Jamaican] culture, and I know some Jamaicans. So, how that happened, they taught me about the culture and I really observed them a lot, and ate with them and all that. They taught me about Rastafarianism and they always had Reggae music playing. I’m not just saying I gravitated towards [Jamaican music] from that, but i went through a stage where that was all I listening to at one time, ” Gates said.
Gates further told Complex that he was a fan of Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Capleton, Sizzla, Frisco Kid, Buju Banton, and Lady Saw.
Gates is best known for the 2016 hit 2 Phones , which peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and I Don’t Get Tired with August Alsina.
In December, he released Move , in which HotNewHipHop noted that Kevin brought “powerful melodies to a dancehall-influenced production for a feel-good anthem”.
