Popcaan’s Charity To Treat St. Thomas Kids With ‘Off-To-School’ Giveaway And Fun Day
The ‘Popcaan Care Foundation’ is back after a two-year hiatus and just in time to treat the children of the Dancehall star’s hometown of St. Thomas with back-to-school supplies for the new school year.
The annual ‘Off-to-School Treat and Fun Day’ had been put on hold due to the pandemic in 2020. Now with charity’s return, hundreds of children from the Eastern parish will be issued school care packages with bags, books and other stationery.
The event will be held at the Rudolph Elder Park in Morant Bay on Thursday, August 25, commencing from 10 am to 6 pm.
A representative of the ‘Popcaan Care Foundation’ said that the campaign’s return has already been welcomed with much excitement and gratitude from parents in the community.
“Anticipation is high as this is the first time in two years that we will be able to do this. Parents are happy, the children are happy and we at Popcaan Care Foundation are immensely overjoyed that the treat is returning,” the rep said.
“Popcaan is all about the people of St Thomas so when we didn’t get to do this the past two years, it really didn’t sit well with him. He loves to help and he especially loves to put smiles on the faces of the youth from the place he calls home so this return is not only special for the people of St Thomas but for Popcaan as well.”
The last hosting of Popcaan’s ‘Off-to-School Treat and Fun Day’ in 2019 feted over 700 children from across St. Thomas. This year the organizers are prepared for a similar turnout.
“We are hoping to cater to as many children as possible. We know times have been hard with the pandemic and parents have been finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. We just want to help make their task a little bit less daunting and ease some of the back-to-school pressure,” the rep added.
This year’s event, which is sponsored by Clarks Original, Unruly Entertainment, OVO, Bashco and SMA Talent will offer a day of fun for the kids with numerous rides and refreshments.
Earlier this month, the Queen of Dancehall Spice also held a back-to-school event at Hope Gardens in Kingston via her Grace Hamilton Women Empowerment Foundation (GHWEF). The August 5 event however ended prematurely due to disorderly conduct from eager families.
