Foota Hype Believes The COVID-19 Pandemic Is God Avenging His Detention

Foota Hype, who recently became a free man following his detention, at a Florida based Immigration Detention Centre, is back to his controversial ways. This time the Dancehall selector is quoted in a Jamaica Observer article saying that the deadly COVID-19 pandemic is because he was wrongfully imprisoned and God was avenging him.

Foota, whose real name is Oneil Thomas, told the Observer in a recent interview that he believes: “When God saw that they locked up an innocent man, He was upset and so He just lock up the whole world with this pandemic,” a statement which is sure to draw some controversy and ire from Dancehall fans.

Thomas who was held at the Krome Detention Center in Florida also shared about his happiness at being released.

“I am very ecstatic, very excited…I can actually call my children when I want to. When I was locked up, I could only talk to a limited amount of people,” he said.
He was released last Wednesday after he was detained on Saturday, December 14, after arriving at Port Everglades Seaport aboard the Independence of the Seas, from Falmouth, Jamaica. At the time he was apprehended for further review of his travel documents and admissibility status. He had been attending the Welcome to Jamrock cruise.

Foota thanked his sister for her persistence in ensuring that he was freed.

“I had some strong people helping me to operate [like Kerry Ann]…I had some really strong people around me. As an innocent man, not being able to see your children or get proper food; it was hard to deal with,” he said.

He added that it was his sister who helped to keep him calm when he became desperate for freedom.

“When I saw one month pass, and then two, I said: ‘No, I am going to call the deportation officer and tell them to send me back to Jamaica.’ But, Kerry Ann said: ‘No’ and Mama. So we just fight it,” he said.

Thomas was eventually released mostly because he is diabetic and authorities took precautions to help prevent him from contracting the coronavirus while in custody.
Even though he believes that God is avenging him he took the time to thank his fans for their support as well.

“I would like to say thanks for all the prayers and encouraging words. All those who supported me emotionally and financially: I am very grateful. I would also like to say thanks to those who did not even ‘blink an eye’ on me during my darkest time,” he said.

He also revealed that he hoped to visit Jamaica soon but he’ll have to wait until flight restrictions are lifted in both countries.

Foota’s Instagram has already been very active since his release and many fans are happy to have him back and doing what he does best.  The selector will be holding an online party tomorrow on his Instagram page called “Gallis Wednesday”.
