Buju Banton

Buju Banton, born Mark Anthony Myrie in Kingston, Jamaica, is a landmark figure in reggae and dancehall music. He began recording in the late 1980s and rose to prominence in the early 1990s with a run of hit singles that helped define the dancehall era, including work that broke a Jamaican chart record previously associated with Bob Marley. His early releases established him as a commanding deejay with a distinctive voice and uncompromising style, while albums such as Mr. Mention and Voice of Jamaica cemented his commercial success. In 1995, Til Shiloh marked a major artistic shift toward roots reggae and socially conscious songwriting, expanding his reputation beyond dancehall into global reggae. He later continued with acclaimed releases such as Inna Heights, Unchained Spirit, and Before the Dawn, the latter earning him a Grammy Award. His 2023 album Born for Greatness further confirmed his enduring influence and status as one of Jamaica’s most important contemporary reggae artists.
